Erick Roig was in the midst of a career shift at Walmart — from filling orders at Fulfillment Center 8905 in Davenport, Florida, to driving out of Transportation Office 6020 in Brooksville, Florida. He had a few weeks to go before graduating from Walmart’s Associate-to-Driver program when he got to talking to one of his driver mentors. This older driver shared that he’d been with his wife for more than 30 years. He told Erick how important it is for drivers, who spend a lot of time away, to have someone supporting them on the home front.

Erick took this advice to heart, and the conversation sparked an idea.

What if he took his upcoming graduation ceremony as a chance to surprise his high school sweetheart Karin with a proposal? “I thought, it’s a big opportunity for me, it might as well be a big opportunity for her,” he says.

So Erick turned to his fellow associates for help setting the scene. He asked the other graduates to present Karin with a red rose at the Associate-to-Driver graduation ceremony. Soon, Karin was holding a whole bouquet. Then Erick approached, dropped to one knee and popped the question. With other associates and their families looking on and cheering, Karin said yes.

The couple has been together for 16 years and has two kids — a 10-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. With his new job as a Walmart driver and marriage on the horizon, Erick is excited for the year ahead!
