Nancy Benfit proves that when you enjoy your job, people notice.

Nancy Benfit loves her job as a cashier in Store 1543 in Spearfish, South Dakota, and it shows! “I love working with customers,” she says. Her friendly attitude and eagerness to help have made her popular with regular customers.

Her store manager, Corey Heiting, explains, “Nancy consistently has customers that will wait in line just to be cashiered by her.”

Nancy started at Walmart in April 1994. She can often be found helping customers find items they need. That’s all in a day’s work for any Walmart associate, but it’s a little different for Nancy, who is hard of hearing due to ear nerve damage she was born with. She typically relies on reading customers’ lips, which has been difficult lately in light of mask requirements.

“I try my best to listen to them with the mask on,” Nancy says. “It is very hard on me, but I don’t give up. I love my job, my coworkers and customers, too.”

Nancy grew up in Lead, South Dakota, and went to the South Dakota School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls before moving to Spearfish. Hearing aids, which Nancy has worn since she was 5, have helped—improving her hearing to about 50 percent. As she gets older, however, their ability to help will decrease.

Nancy has also overcome some serious health challenges. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005. She said the six months of chemo and radiation treatments were tough, but her team at Walmart was there for her. She was able to take time off without losing pay.

“Walmart is very good to me—very helpful and supportive,” she says. Walmart is lucky to have you, Nancy! Thanks for your perseverance and positivity!
